Meanwhile, in the life of Cindy Sherman

The whole life
  1. 1991–2005

A loft on Mercer Street in SoHo

Sherman lived in a fifth-floor co-op loft at 84 Mercer Street; she later sold it to the actor Hank Azaria and bought two floors of a building overlooking the Hudson in West SoHo — one her apartment, the other her studio and office.

  2. 1997

A retrospective in Los Angeles and at MoMA

The Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles, and MoMA mounted a travelling retrospective of Sherman's work, sponsored by Madonna.

  3. 1997

    Directs the film “Office Killer”

Sherman directed a feature film starring Jeanne Tripplehorn, Molly Ringwald and Carol Kane, whose character, arranging bodies like a puppeteer, is a stand-in for the artist. It grossed $37,446 and drew poor reviews; the film critic Stephen Holden called it 'sadly inept'.

  4. 1999

    Divorce from Michel Auder

Sherman and the director Michel Auder divorced; through the marriage she had become stepmother to his daughter Alexandra and to Alexandra's half-sister Gaby Hoffmann. A five-year relationship with Paul Hasegawa-Overacker followed.

  5. 1999 · Award

    Hasselblad Award

  6. 2000

    A house in Sag Harbor

For many years Sherman spent her summers in the Catskills; in 2000 she bought the songwriter Marvin Hamlisch's house in Sag Harbor for $1.5 million, and later a 19th-century house on Accabonac Harbor in East Hampton.
