About the sculpture

Until recently this bust portrait of an unidentified man was recorded as an unregistered object in the Museum. At present no information is available regarding its provenance. It is, however, signed and dated. Richard Westmacott the younger (1799-1872) was one of the Westmacott family of sculptors. He first exhibited at the Royal Academy of Arts in London in 1827. He was elected as member of the Royal Academy in 1849, and in 1857 he took over the role of Professor of Sculpture there from his father Sir Richard Westmacott.
