In the life of Nicolai Abildgaard

The whole life
  1. 1794–1798

Decorating the Levetzau Palace at Amalienborg

After the fire Abildgaard obtained decorative commissions and the chance to work as an architect: he decorated the Levetzau Palace (now Christian VIII’s Palace) at Amalienborg, home of King Christian VII’s half-brother Frederik, with his protégé Bertel Thorvaldsen leading the sculptural work. He drew up plans for rebuilding Christiansborg but did not get the commission.

  2. 1801

Director of the Academy again, for life

Abildgaard was again chosen as director of the Academy and remained so until his death; by other accounts this term began in 1802.

  3. 1803

    Married: Juliane Marie Abildgaard

  4. 1804

The throne room: a commission and a quarrel

Abildgaard received a commission for a series of paintings for the throne room of the new palace, but disagreements with the crown prince halted the project. He went on designing furniture and room decorations for the court.
