In the life of Albert Marquet
The whole life1890s
Meets Henri Matisse
At the École des Arts Décoratifs Marquet meets Henri Matisse; for a time the two share a room and influence each other's work, and the friendship lasts all their lives.
1898
Paints in pure colours with Matisse
As early as 1898 Marquet and Matisse paint together in pure colours at Arcueil and in the Luxembourg Gardens, in what would later be called the Fauve style.
1905
The Salon d'Automne and the name “Fauves”
In 1905 Marquet exhibits at the Salon d'Automne, where his paintings are hung together with those of Matisse, Vlaminck, Derain, Friesz, Rouault, Dufy, Manguin, Braque, Valtat, Dufrénoy and Puy. Dismayed by the intense colour, critics call the artists the “Fauves”, the wild beasts; Marquet himself, although he painted with them for years, used less bright and violent colours than the others.
