About the painting

Titania and Bottom is an oil painting by the Anglo-Swiss painter Henry Fuseli. It dates to around 1790 and is in Tate Britain, in London. It was commissioned for the Boydell Shakespeare Gallery and depicts a scene from A Midsummer Night's Dream by William Shakespeare.

    Marries Sophia Rawlins

    In 1788 Fuseli married Sophia Rawlins, originally one of his models. When Mary Wollstonecraft, whose portrait he had painted, pursued him determinedly and planned a trip with him to Paris, Sophia put an end to their communication.

    Elected a full Academician

    Soon after his marriage in 1788 Fuseli became an associate of the Royal Academy, and in 1790 a full Academician, presenting “Thor Battering the Midgard Serpent” as his diploma work.
