May one see it?
London, United Kingdom
It belongs to the collection, but is not on display at present.
This statuette of carved boxwood is by an unknown artist from the Netherlands from ca. 1400-1410.
The Virgin stands on an integrally-carved socle, dressed in a capacious mantle which covers her head and is pulled across her body, creating a series of curving folds.
The statuette is a reduced member, with slight modifications of style, of a small group of stone sculptures of the Virgin and Child related to the well known Virgin of the north portal of Saint-Martin at Halle (Hal) of about 1400-10.
