    Illustrates George Eliot’s novel “Romola”

    Leighton made the illustrations for George Eliot’s novel Romola, published in 1863.

  2. 1864

    Elected an Associate of the Royal Academy

    By the early 1860s Leighton was earning some £4,000 a year, and in 1864 he was elected an Associate of the Royal Academy; he became a full Academician in 1868.

  3. 1864

    A mansion with a studio on Holland Park Road

    By 1864 a luxurious mansion with a studio had been built for Leighton in Kensington, on Holland Park Road. Its centrepiece is the Arab Hall; it held his collection of Iznik tiles and paintings by Old Masters and contemporaries, and it is now the Leighton House museum.
