On 3 October 1649 Steen married Margriet, the daughter of Jan van Goyen; they had eight children.

The christenings of his first children: Thaddeus and Eva
On 6 February 1651 Steen's eldest child, his son Thaddeus, was christened in The Hague, followed two years later by his daughter Eva; Thaddeus, like Cornelis, became a painter.
