About the sculpture
This relief was originally part of a medium size altarpiece devoted to the Lamentation. Altarpieces of this size were mid-way between the large altarpieces made for high altars and chapels, and the small portable 'house altars'. These medium size altarpieces had a single sculpture at the centre. They were designed to help worshippers feel and share the emotions represented by the religious image. Many of them were owned by women or by convents. The subject-matter reflected this and often centred on the Pieta. This is the image of the Virgin Mary holding the Dead Christ. The sculptures, as here, often evoke and reflect powerful emotions. This example emphasises the deep and touching sorrow of a mother grieving for her dead son.
