Meanwhile, in the life of Robert Indiana

The whole life
  1. summer 1969

Rents the upper floor of “The Star of Hope” on Vinalhaven

Visiting the Life photographer Elliot Elisofon on the island of Vinalhaven, he begins renting the upper floor of the hundred-year-old Victorian Odd Fellows Hall, “The Star of Hope.” He was drawn to the order’s insignia of three interlocking links: truth, friendship and, the important one in the middle, love.

  2. 1971–1972

“Five” on The Mary Tyler Moore Show

An orange, brown and white version of Five, from his 1965 Numbers series, appears in an episode of The Mary Tyler Moore Show in which Rhoda redecorates Lou Grant’s living room. Lou, evidently no fan of pop art, grumbles that she must have gone through four other paintings before choosing this one.

  3. 1973

Buys “The Star of Hope” for $10,000

After Elisofon’s death he buys the Odd Fellows Hall from his estate for $10,000.
