About the work

The title of this work is a reference to the Christian story of the Last Supper, in which Jesus Christ shared cups of wine with his disciples, knowing full well that one of them would soon betray them. To drink from a “bitter cup” means to accept one’s fate as something that cannot be avoided. Calapai presents this possibility as a horrifying reality, portraying a grotesque, demon-like monster looming over a much smaller figure crouching in fear.
