    Berlin: sharing a studio with Christian Krohg

    He follows Gussow, who has become director of the Royal Academy of Arts in Berlin, to finish his studies there; he shares a studio with Christian Krohg, the two admire Émile Zola and Gustave Flaubert, and Adolph von Menzel serves as his model.

  2. 1878

    First paintings shown at the Academy exhibition

    He presents his paintings for the first time at the 52nd exhibition of the Royal Academy of Arts in Berlin.

    Move to Paris

    He moves to Paris, where the poet and critic Jules Laforgue is already championing his prints; he lives there until 1886 or 1887, studies Goya and Daumier at the Louvre and begins sculpting about 1883.
