    Series of Exhibitions in Europe

    He began a series of exhibitions of his war paintings in Paris, continued in London, Berlin, Dresden, Vienna, and other cities; their sensational subjects and anti-war message drew a wide public.

  2. 1882–1883

    Second Journey to India

    He traveled through India once again.

  3. 1884

    Journey to Syria and Palestine

    He traveled to Syria and Palestine, after which he painted pictures on Gospel subjects that provoked controversy with their unaccustomed realism.

  4. 1889

    Meets Lidia Andreevskaya in New York

    During a trip to the United States he met in New York the pianist Lidia Andreevskaya, who had come to provide musical accompaniment for his exhibitions; on his return to Russia their life together began.

  5. 1894

    Official Marriage to Lidia Andreevskaya

    His official marriage to Lidia Vasilyevna Andreevskaya was concluded — after the birth of their first children.

    Journey Through the Russian North

    With his family he traveled along the Pinega, the Northern Dvina, and the White Sea, and visited the Solovetsky Islands.
