  1. 27 July 1849

    Death of his wife Madeleine

    Ingres was devastated by the loss of his wife, who died on 27 July 1849, and he was never able to finish the Dampierre murals.

  2. 1851

    A gift to Montauban and leaving the École des Beaux-Arts

    In July 1851 Ingres announced a gift of his artworks to his native Montauban, and in October he resigned as professor at the École des Beaux-Arts.

  3. 1852

    Second marriage: Delphine Ramel

    In 1852 the 71-year-old Ingres married the 43-year-old Delphine Ramel, a relative of his friend Marcotte d'Argenteuil. He was rejuvenated and in the following decade completed several significant works.
