    Skowhegan Medal, Brandeis award, “Friends of Barcelona”

    Lichtenstein received the Skowhegan Medal for Painting (1977), the Creative Arts Award in Painting from Brandeis University (1991) and the “Amici de Barcelona” award from Mayor Pasqual Maragall (1993).

  2. 1977–1996

    Honorary doctorates

    Lichtenstein received several honorary doctorates, among them from the California Institute of the Arts (1977), Southampton College (1980), Ohio State University (1987), the Royal College of Art (1993) and George Washington University (1996).

  3. March – June 1987

    First solo drawings show at MoMA for a living artist

    From March to June 1987 the Museum of Modern Art showed a solo exhibition of Lichtenstein’s drawings, the first at MoMA for a living artist.

  4. 1989

    “Torpedo… Los!” sells for $5.5 million

    The painting “Torpedo… Los!” (1963) sold at Christie’s for $5.5 million, a record sum at the time, making Lichtenstein one of only three living artists to attract such sums.
