The whole lifec. 1839
At 56 he sails out onto the open sea
At the age of 56 he sails around the Skagerrak, the Kattegat and the North Sea, as far as the English Channel. The experience of the open sea gives a new dimension to his marine paintings: until then calm, they now pay more attention to movement and waves.

His eyesight fails and he gives up painting
Because of problems with his eyesight he gives up painting in the 1840s.
1841
Publishes a treatise on linear perspective
Out of an increasing interest in perspective, which grew from his marine paintings, he writes the treatise “Linear Perspective Used in the Art of Painting” (1841) and teaches classes on the subject at the Academy.
