The Vatican rejects his “Happy Apocalypse”

In 1998 the Vatican commissioned a work from Rauschenberg for the Jubilee year 2000, to be shown in the Padre Pio Liturgical Hall at San Giovanni Rotondo. On the theme of the Last Judgement he created “The Happy Apocalypse” (1999), a twenty-foot maquette, but the Vatican rejected it, judging his depiction of God as a satellite dish an inappropriate theological reference.
