A turn to sculpture, architecture and design
In the late 1970s Acconci turns to sculpture, architecture and design, greatly increasing the scale of his work, if not his art-world profile. Over the next two decades he develops public artworks and parks, airport rest areas, artificial islands and other architectural projects that frequently embrace participation, change and playfulness.

A retrospective at the Stedelijk Museum
The Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam organizes a retrospective of Acconci's work.

A Guggenheim Fellowship
The John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation awards Acconci a fellowship.
