    Exhibition at the Art Institute of Chicago

    In 1938 works by Bonnard and Vuillard were shown at an exhibition at the Art Institute of Chicago.

  2. September 1939

    Departure from Paris Because of the War

    The outbreak of the Second World War in September 1939 forced Bonnard to leave Paris for the south of France, where he remained until the end of the war.

  3. 1940s

    Refusal to Paint Pétain's Portrait

    During the German occupation Bonnard refused to paint an official portrait of the collaborationist Marshal Pétain, but accepted a commission for a religious painting of Saint Francis de Sales, to whom he gave the face of his late friend Vuillard.

  4. 1942

    Death of Marthe

    In 1942 Marthe de Méligny, Bonnard's wife and the model of his paintings over several decades, died.
