Convicted of blasphemy: “Christ in a gas mask”
Grosz and his publisher Wieland Herzfelde are prosecuted and fined on charges of blasphemy and sacrilege for two anticlerical drawings in the portfolio Hintergrund (Background): one shows prisoners assaulted by a minister who vomits grenades and weapons onto them, the other a crucified Christ in a World War I gas mask and combat boots.

Acquitted by the Reichsgericht in Berlin
After two appeals Grosz and his publisher are finally acquitted by the Reichsgericht in Berlin; the judge decides that it was not an offence to religion but an attack on militarism.

An invitation to teach in New York
Bitterly anti-Nazi, Grosz accepts an invitation to teach the summer semester at the Art Students League of New York; in October 1932 he returns to Germany.
