About the sculpture
Eliza Au’s work is primarily guided by her working method – using CAD (computer aided design) to create space which are defined and expressed through a ‘wireframe’. She then brings the wireframe in physical form using craft techniques such as plaster mould making and press moulding clay. Eliza’s practice seeks inspiration from two sources: mathematics and historical ornament. She finds elegance, beauty and balance within mathematical relationships, which exists both in the technical challenge of clay as well as in traditional ornaments on Asian architecture such as religious places. The Lantern series was first made in 2022, referencing the lattice structure of Chinese lanterns, and recalls traditional architecture Tulou of the Fujian province, which is a large, enclosed and fortified earth building often in circular configuration.
