Invited to build Chandigarh
At the invitation of the Punjab authorities Le Corbusier took on the largest project of his life, Chandigarh, the state's new capital, built over about ten years. He worked with Maxwell Fry, Jane Drew and Pierre Jeanneret, and Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru oversaw the work.

First visit to the hill at Ronchamp
A convinced atheist who believed in architecture's power to create a sacred space, Le Corbusier first visited the remote hilltop at Ronchamp, saw the ruins of the old chapel and sketched possible forms for a new one.
