Musical friendships at the Academy: Liszt and Paganini
Ingres gave music much attention: he welcomed Franz Liszt and Fanny Mendelssohn, formed a long friendship with Liszt, and played Beethoven's violin works with the music students and his friend Niccolò Paganini. When Stendhal, visiting the Academy, disparaged Beethoven, Ingres told the doorman to say he was not in if that gentleman ever called again.

The Duc d'Orléans portrait and his death
The portrait of the Duc d'Orléans was completed in 1842; a few months later the heir to the throne was killed in a carriage accident. Ingres received commissions for further copies, for seventeen stained-glass windows for the chapel on the site of the accident and for eight more for the Orléans chapel at Dreux.
