The “bricks controversy” over “Equivalent VIII”
After an article in The Sunday Times, the work that the Tate had shown several times without incident becomes the centre of a scandal and is later defaced with blue food dye; the “bricks controversy” becomes one of the most famous British debates about contemporary art.

Meets Ana Mendieta
At AIR Gallery in New York the artists Leon Golub and Nancy Spero introduce Andre to the Cuban-born avant-garde artist Ana Mendieta. A romance soon begins: he travels with her through Italy and Germany, introduces her to New York’s art society and helps organize her exhibitions.
1980
The book “12 Dialogues”
NYU Press publishes “12 Dialogues”, in which Andre and Hollis Frampton took turns replying to each other at a typewriter in poetry and free-form essay-like texts.
