Meanwhile, in the life of Edward Ruscha

The whole life
  1. from 1980

Devises his own typeface “Boy Scout Utility Modern”

From 1980 he uses an all-caps typeface of his own invention in which curved letter forms are squared off (as in the Hollywood sign); from the mid-1980s many of his paintings include black or white “blanks” or “censor strips” to suggest where the “missing” words would have been placed.

  2. 19 June 1982 – 28 September 1982

    Exhibition: documenta 7

  3. 1983

    First retrospective at SFMOMA

The long series of museum retrospectives begins: the exhibition at SFMOMA travels on to the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Vancouver Art Gallery, the San Antonio Museum of Art and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art.
