Meanwhile, in the life of Marcel Duchamp

The whole life
  1. 1923

Back in Paris, and into chess

Back in Paris in 1923 he was in essence no longer a practising artist: his main interest became chess, which he studied for the rest of his life to the exclusion of most other activities.

  2. 1924

    Appears in René Clair’s “Entr’acte”

In René Clair’s short film Entr’acte he is seen briefly playing chess with Man Ray.

  3. 1925

    Becomes a chess master

He designed the poster for the Third French Chess Championship and played in it himself, finishing at 50 per cent (3–3 with two draws) and earning the title of chess master.

  4. 1927

    Married: Lydie Sarazin-Levassor

  5. 1927–1928

    Divorce from Lydie Sarazin-Levassor

The marriage of June 1927, rumoured to be one of convenience since the bride was the daughter of a wealthy automobile manufacturer, fell apart within six months: in early January 1928 Duchamp said he could no longer bear the responsibility and confinement of marriage. His wife, distressed by his fascination with chess, glued his pieces to the board.
