In the life of Edward Hopper

The whole life
  1. 1927–1928

Record sales for him, and a Buick

“Two on the Aisle” (1927) sells for a personal record of $1,500, enabling Hopper to buy an automobile for field trips to remote areas of New England; in 1928 “Manhattan Bridge Loop” sells for $2,500.

  2. 1930

Summers in South Truro on Cape Cod, for the rest of his life

In 1930 the Hoppers rent a cottage in South Truro on Cape Cod and return every summer for the rest of their lives, building a summer house there in 1934; from there they take driving trips into other areas when Hopper needs to search for fresh material to paint.

  3. 1930

“House by the Railroad” becomes MoMA's first oil painting

In 1930 the art patron Stephen Clark donates “House by the Railroad” (1925) to the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the first oil painting that it acquires for its collection.

  4. 1931

The Whitney and the Met pay thousands for his work

In 1931, during the Great Depression, major museums, including the Whitney Museum of American Art and the Metropolitan Museum of Art, pay thousands of dollars for Hopper's works; that year he sells 30 paintings, 13 of them watercolours.
