About the sculpture

At age 16, Kobayashi Senpo contracted a middle-ear disease, which rendered him deaf. After World War II, his father began to carve netsuke (small carved toggles used to attach objects to a kimono sash), and Senpo learned from him. Senpo eventually found his own style and focused on nature subjects. He became especially known for his cicadas.
