Этюд к картине Групповой портрет художников общества «Мир искусства».

1910 год в истории отечественного искусства связан с «расколом» Союза русских художников и выходом из него петербургской части членов, осенью того же года организовавших общество «Мир искусства». Под впечатлением этого события и состоявшегося учредительного собрания Кустодиев задумал групповой портрет художников «Мира искусства», который должен был запечатлеть участников объединения. Вскоре в квартире А. Н. Бенуа был создан ряд подготовительных этюдов — автопортрет, портреты Бенуа, В. Н. Аргутинского-Долгорукова, А. П. Остроумовой-Лебедевой, Л. С. Бакста. Круглов В. Ф. Лансере Евгений Евгеньевич (1875–1946) — график, живописец-монументалист. Учился в РШ ОПХ (1892–1895), в Студии Коларосси (1895–1897), в мастерских Ж.-П. Лорана и Б. Констана (1897) в Париже. Оформлял журнал «Мир искусства», иллюстрировал литературу. Осуществил ряд росписей в зданиях неоклассицизма. В 1905–1906 сотрудничал в сатирических журналах «Жупел» и «Адская почта». Один из ведущих членов объединения «Мир искусства». Народный художник РСФСР.

    Treatment at a Swiss clinic

    Severe symptoms forced Kustodiev to spend several months (other accounts say a year) in a private clinic at a Swiss mountain resort. Several operations brought only temporary relief.

    First stage work: “An Ardent Heart”

    Kustodiev first worked in the theatre, designing the sets for Alexander Ostrovsky's An Ardent Heart; such was his success that further orders came pouring in.

    Designs “The Death of Pazukhin” at the Moscow Art Theatre

    Kustodiev designed the sets and costumes for The Death of Pazukhin at the Moscow Art Theatre (other accounts date it to 1914).

    Teaches at the New Art Workshop

    Kustodiev taught at Princess M. D. Gagarina's New Art Workshop in St Petersburg.

  5. 1914

    Gold medal at the Baltic Exhibition in Malmö

    Kustodiev received a gold medal at the Baltic Exhibition in Malmö, Sweden.

  6. 1915

    “Autumn Violins” at the Art Theatre, and nightmares

    Kustodiev came to Moscow to design I. D. Surguchev's Autumn Violins at the Art Theatre already gravely ill: at night he screamed with pain, haunted by the same nightmare of black cats sinking their claws into his back and tearing his vertebrae.
