In the life of Hyacinthe Rigaud

The whole life
  1. 1709

    Ennobled by Perpignan

Rigaud's hometown of Perpignan conferred nobility on him.

  2. 1712

Drevet's engraving of the Louis XIV portrait

Pierre Drevet engraved Rigaud's portraits in copper — forty-one prints are known, among them the famous portrait of Louis XIV (1712). For his large formal oil portraits Rigaud prepared drawings in Italian pencil and chalk on toned paper; Drevet engraved from those drawings, while Rigaud supervised the work and often corrected it.

  3. 1715

Death of Louis XIV and a change of clientele

With the death of Louis XIV in 1715 and the Regency of Philippe, Duke of Orléans, who had a marked taste for Italian artists and new national talents, Rigaud's clientele changed: he had to turn to patrons outside the Parisian court and to foreign monarchs.
