In the life of André Masson
The whole life1929
Breaks with Breton and leaves the Surrealists
By the end of the 1920s Masson finds Breton's insistence on the Surrealists' allegiance to the French Communist Party stifling, leaves the Surrealist movement and turns to a more structured figurative style, often with violent or erotic themes; he joins the “dissident Surrealists” gathered around his close friends Michel Leiris and Georges Bataille.
1930–1933
Relationship with the British artist Paule Vézelay
Masson is in a relationship with Paule Vézelay, a British abstract artist living in Paris, whose work also inspired him.
1933
First work as a stage designer: “Les Présages”
Masson designs the production of Léonide Massine's ballet-symphony “Les Présages”; later, after returning to France, he will continue to work in the theatre.
