A dresser at the English National Opera
In 1989 Doig works part-time as a dresser at the English National Opera.
1989–1990
Master's degree at Chelsea School of Art
Doig studies at Chelsea School of Art and receives an MA.
1991
The Whitechapel Artist Prize and a solo show
Soon after graduating from Chelsea, Doig is awarded the prestigious Whitechapel Artist Prize, which culminates in a solo exhibition at the Whitechapel Art Gallery; among the works shown are “Swamped”, “Iron Hill” and “The Architect's Home in the Ravine”.

Restoring Le Corbusier's Unité d'Habitation
Doig joins La Première Rue, a group of architects and artists restoring Le Corbusier's Unité d'Habitation at Briey-en-Forêt: he literally scrapes paint and varnish off the interior walls. Walking around the building and photographing it, he decides to paint it as well, and a series of paintings and works on paper follows.
1993
First prize at the John Moores exhibition
Doig wins first prize at the John Moores exhibition with his painting “Blotter”. The award brings him public recognition.
