In the life of Alfred Sisley

The whole life
  1. 30 October 1839

    Born

  2. c. 1861 – 1862

Back in Paris: he chooses painting

Having shown no aptitude for business, Sisley returned from London to Paris and chose painting over the family trade.

  3. 1870–1871

The war ruins his father: family support ends

The outbreak of the Franco-Prussian War had a calamitous effect on William Sisley's trading business, and the remittances Sisley had lived on came to an abrupt end; his relatives also shunned him because of Eugénie's humble and unmarried status. His finances remained precarious for the rest of his life, dependent on patrons, friends and the sale of his work.

  4. 8 October 1898

    Death of his wife Eugénie

Eugénie Sisley died on 8 October 1898 and was buried in Moret cemetery the following day. Sisley, by then succumbing to throat cancer, was unable to attend the funeral.

  5. 29 January 1899

Circumstances of his death: poverty and throat cancer

Sisley died at Moret-sur-Loing, near Fontainebleau, in poverty and obscurity, of rheumatism and throat cancer, only a few months after his wife.
