About the painting

This panel of Persian calligraphy was once part of a Mughal royal album. Inscriptions state that the calligraphy was done in the city of Burhanpur in the hijri year 1040, regnal year 3 (1630-1631). The court was in residence at Burhanpur from February 1630 until March 1632.

Signed pages in other collections demonstrate that the writing was done by the Dara Shokuh, the son of the emperor Shah Jahan (r. 1628-1658). The prince was sixteen when he completed this calligraphy.

On the other side of the page there is a portrait of the Mughal emperor Babur, probably done at the same time. This folio was bought by the museum from an auction at Sotheby's, London, in 1972.
