Meanwhile, in the life of Pieter Claesz

The whole life
  1. 1617

    Marries in Haarlem

Pieter Claesz marries in Haarlem; in 1620 his son Nicolaes, the future well-known landscape painter, is born.

  2. 1620

    Moves to Haarlem

Pieter Claesz moves to Haarlem (other accounts say he had already married there in 1617); in the same year his son, the future landscape painter Nicolaes Pieterszoon Berchem, is born. Together with Willem Claeszoon Heda, who also worked in Haarlem, he is regarded as a founder of the Haarlem school of still life painting, and he signs his paintings “PC” or “PCH” (Pieter Claesz of Haarlem).

  3. 1620

Joins the Antwerp Guild of St. Luke

Pieter Claesz, born in Berchem near Antwerp, becomes a member of the Guild of St. Luke. Almost nothing is known about his early years; he is thought to have trained as a painter in his native Berchem, a district of Antwerp.
