  1. autumn 1760

    Arrives in England and works for the clockmaker Rimbault

    In the autumn of 1760 he arrives in England and at first finds work with the clockmaker Stephen Rimbault, painting decorative designs for his clocks.

  2. c. 1760

    Marries the daughter of a court official

    Around the age of 27, Zoffany marries the daughter of a court official in Würzburg; she accompanies him to London but returns to Germany within a decade or so.

  3. not after 1764

    The patronage of George III and Queen Charlotte

    By 1764 Zoffany enjoys the patronage of King George III and Queen Charlotte for his charmingly informal scenes.

  4. 1768

    A founding member of the Royal Academy of Arts

    Zoffany is a founding member of the new Royal Academy of Arts. He enjoys great popularity for his society and theatrical portraits, painting many prominent actors, above all David Garrick, the most famous actor of his day, often in costume — “Garrick as Hamlet” and “Garrick as King Lear”.
