Series of Exhibitions in Europe
He began a series of exhibitions of his war paintings in Paris, continued in London, Berlin, Dresden, Vienna, and other cities; their sensational subjects and anti-war message drew a wide public.
1882–1883
Second Journey to India
He traveled through India once again.
1884
Journey to Syria and Palestine
He traveled to Syria and Palestine, after which he painted pictures on Gospel subjects that provoked controversy with their unaccustomed realism.

Meets Lidia Andreevskaya in New York
During a trip to the United States he met in New York the pianist Lidia Andreevskaya, who had come to provide musical accompaniment for his exhibitions; on his return to Russia their life together began.

Journey to Japan
He set out for Japan but stayed only three months because of the approaching war; he brought back examples of decorative and applied art and about twenty studies, in which his manner shifted toward an impressionistic play of colors.
