In the life of Gerard van Honthorst

The whole life
  1. 1623

    Marries and heads the Guild of St. Luke

    In the year of his marriage Honthorst was president of the Guild of St. Luke in Utrecht.

  2. 1626

    Hosts a dinner for Rubens

    Honthorst hosted a dinner for Peter Paul Rubens and portrayed him in an allegory as the honest man sought and found by Diogenes.

  3. 1628

    Invited to England by Charles I

    Elizabeth, Queen of Bohemia, sister of Charles I of England, then in exile in the Netherlands, commissioned paintings from Honthorst and engaged him as drawing master to her children; through her the king came to know him and invited him to England. In London he painted allegories and portraits of courtiers.

  4. 1635–1652

    Opens a second studio in The Hague

    Honthorst was so popular in the Netherlands that he opened a second studio in The Hague, where he painted portraits of members of the court and taught drawing; in his large studios many pupils and assistants also made replicas of his royal portraits.

  5. 1641

    Court painter to the Prince of Orange

    In The Hague Honthorst was appointed court painter to William, Prince of Orange.
