  1. 1990–1992

    A member of the National Academy of Design

    In 1990 he is elected an Associate Academician of the National Academy of Design, and in 1992 he becomes a full Academician.

  2. 1992

    Mentors teenagers in the Art Works project

    He is one of ten artists who volunteer to mentor economically deprived teens in a summer-long photography program, Art Works: Teenagers and Artists Collaborate on the Polaroid 20 x 24 Camera, produced by Janeil Engelstad, The Education Project and Polaroid.

  3. 1993–1995

    The Venice Biennale and the Carnegie International

    He takes part in the Venice Biennale (1993, 1995 and 2003) and the Carnegie International (1995), among almost 800 group exhibitions in all.

  4. 1995

    Meets Grant Romer: the road to the daguerreotype

    Curator Colin Westerbeck uses a grant from the Lannan Foundation to bring Close together with Grant Romer, director of conservation at the George Eastman House; from then on Close explores difficult photographic processes such as the daguerreotype, in collaboration with Jerry Spagnoli, and sophisticated modular, cell-based forms such as tapestry.
