Anverso: Llegada de la barca A la izquierda, una barca en la que hay al menos cuatro figuras masculinas, trabajando en distintas actitudes. A la derecha, un grupo de figuras de número indeterminado están en la orilla de la playa o el puerto esperando su llegada, habiendo una, junto a la proa, que se inclina para ayudar a llegar a la barca. En el grupo de figuras podemos identificar a otra femenina con los brazos en jarras. Reverso 1 (hoja 8): Mujer en la barca Barca alargada, seguramente varada en la arena por la inscripción en la parte inferior (en seco). En la zona izquierda hay una mujer sentada en la barca, de perfil a la derecha pero que gira la cabeza hacia nosotros, quedando de frente, aunque no se han dibujado los rasgos de la cara. Sostiene una sombrilla abierta sobre ella para cubrirse del sol. Reverso 2 (hoja 9): Rasguños A la izquierda, rasguños sin identificar.     Sorolla returned to Valencia to marry Clotilde García del Castillo; by 1895 they had three children — María, Joaquín and Elena.

    Moves to Madrid: large canvases for the salons

    The family moved to Madrid. For the next decade Sorolla concentrated on large canvases of orientalist, mythological, historical and social subjects for salons and international exhibitions in Madrid, Paris, Venice, Munich, Berlin and Chicago.

    “A Research”: the Prize of Honour in Madrid

    Two paintings linking art and science, “Portrait of Dr. Simarro at the Microscope” and “A Research”, won Sorolla the Prize of Honour at the National Exhibition of Fine Arts. He showed his friend Simarro in the laboratory, catching the contrast between the reddish-yellow light of a gas burner and the weak mauvish light from the window.
