Retrospective at MoMA in New York
The retrospective at the Museum of Modern Art travels on to Houston, Los Angeles and Berlin. The same year the curator Kirk Varnedoe calls Twombly’s work influential among artists, discomfiting to many critics and difficult even for sophisticated initiates of postwar art.

The Cy Twombly Pavilion opens in Houston
The Cy Twombly Pavilion of the Menil Collection, designed by Renzo Piano, houses more than thirty of his paintings, sculptures and works on paper dating from 1953 to 1994 (other accounts say works made from 1954 on).
