The whole life
  1. 1996

    Becomes a professor at the Düsseldorf Art Academy

    He returns, as a professor, to the very school that had dismissed him as a student decades earlier. His master students included Oda Jaune and Renata Jaworska.

  2. 1997

    The MARCO prize in Monterrey

    He wins the MARCO prize of the Museum of Contemporary Art in Monterrey, Mexico, at the time the world’s best-endowed art prize. The same year he becomes a member of the European Academy of Sciences and Arts in Salzburg.

  3. 1998

    Diagnosed with ALS

    He was diagnosed with ALS (Lou Gehrig’s disease). When he could no longer paint with his left hand, he switched to the right.

  4. 1998

    Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany

    He is awarded the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany (Bundesverdienstkreuz).
