Joins the Artists' Union of the USSR
Bilibin joined the Artists' Union of the USSR. From 1937 until his death he lived and worked at 25 Gulyarnaya Street (now Lizy Chaikinoy Street), which now bears a memorial plaque.
1939
Illustrates “A Song about Tsar Ivan Vasilyevich…”
A Song about Tsar Ivan Vasilyevich, a Young Oprichnik and the Successful Merchant Ivan Kalashnikov appeared with Bilibin's illustrations, followed in 1940 by N. V. Vodovozov's Stories of the Capital Kiev and the Russian Bogatyrs.
1941
Refuses to be evacuated from Leningrad
When the Great Patriotic War began, Bilibin refused to leave Leningrad. His last work was a preparatory illustration for the epic Dyuk Stepanovich (1941).
