    Excavating burial mounds near Feodosia

In 1853, on Aivazovsky's initiative, 22 burial mounds are excavated on Mount Tepe-Oba: they yield gold necklaces and earrings, a sphinx, clay statuettes and coins; the best finds he sends to the Hermitage. The excavations lead to his election as a full member of the Russian Geographical Society.
