В редких жанрах XVIII — первой половины XIX века встречаются изображения и крестьянских семей. В них обращают на себя внимание этнографические моменты: костюмы, обряды, патриархальный строй быта. Гармония крестьянской семьи, крестьянского быта, носила скорее ритуальный характер. Народный костюм, сезоны полевых работ, цикл календарных праздников, вписывались в пейзаж, были его частью. Эти буколические образы не отражали личных отношений членов семьи, или переносили в них образы отношений, актуальные для семей аристократических и воспетые семейным портретом: взаимопонимания, нежности, любви супругов друг к другу, к детям.
