В Государственном Эрмитаже хранится одна из лучших коллекций в мире произведений знаменитого фламандского живописца Давида Тенирса Младшего. Свыше сорока картин, относящихся к поре расцвета, демонстрируют основные грани творчества художника и позволяют раскрыть своеобразие его стиля. Картина посвящена теме игр и развлечений фламандцев. Известно более двадцати композиций Тенирса на сюжет игры в шары. Смысл данной игры, которой заняты персонажи перед кабачком, заключается в том, чтобы ударом шара о шар сбить катящееся по земле кольцо. Действие картины разворачивается на фоне красивого речного пейзажа, блистательно написанного художником. Вероятно, эрмитажная картина создана в конце 1640-х гг., поскольку в ней заметна стилистическая близость с другими произведениями Тенирса Младшего, относящимися к этому времени (например, "Пейзаж с крестьянами перед кабачком", Королевский музей изящных искусств, Антверпен).
