Исполненная в русском стиле работа Наталии Гончаровой «Христос» изображает Христа на престоле в окружении символов евангелистов. Бык, орел, лев и ангел «плывут на белых кудрявых облачках». Композиция не следует традиционной иконографии. Над головой Христа – голубь, символ Святого Духа, у Его ног расцветший красный цветок. Как и многие художники авангарда, Гончарова искала свой вариант русского стиля. Работа имеет дарственную надпись, адресованную поэту Николаю Гумилёву. В 1917–1918 годах он был в Париже и провел много времени в обществе живших там Михаила Ларионова и Наталии Гончаровой. В планах Гумилёва было сотрудничество с антрепризой Сергея Дягилева. Гончарова и Ларионов, работавшие над оформлением балета «Русские сказки», пытались помочь Гумилёву, порекомендовав его как возможного автора либретто для будущего сезона «Русских балетов». Дягилев предложил поэту самому выбрать тему.

Гумилёв решил предложить два сюжета – «Гондлу» с оформлением Ларионова и «Феодору» с оформлением Гончаровой. Несмотря на активную совместную работу и почти ежевечерние посещения балетных спектаклей, замысел не был реализован. Гумилёв уехал сначала в Лондон, а затем возвратился в Россию. Этим, очевидно, и объясняется то, что предназначенный ему подарок остался у художников.

    Travels through Spain with Diaghilev and Massine

    After the Ballets Russes' tour of Spain, Goncharova and Larionov made a long journey through the country with Diaghilev and Léonide Massine; she drew a great deal, and the Spanish theme lived on for years in her decorative panels, easel paintings and stage designs.

    Winter and spring in Rome

    Goncharova and Larionov spent the winter and spring of 1917 in Rome.

  4. May 1919

    Settles in Paris for good

    After years in Switzerland, Paris and Rome, Goncharova and Larionov settled in Paris for good (other sources say 1921). She later remarked: “I wanted to go East, and ended up in the West.”

    The Paris Salon d'Automne

    Goncharova exhibited at the Salon d'Automne and from then on took part regularly in the Salon des Tuileries and the Salon des Indépendants.

  6. 1921

    Illustrates “The Tale of Tsar Saltan”

    The Paris publisher Éditions de la Sirène issued Pushkin's tale in Claude Anet's French translation with Goncharova's illustrations; “The Tale of Igor's Campaign” with her drawings followed in 1923.
