справа группа караульных; на переднем плане офицер в красном кафтане с меховой отделкой, в руках трубка, правую ногу поставил на табурет, перед которым на коленях стоит юноша в зеленом, поправляющий шпору офицера; за ним караульный в сером мундире, со шляпой в правой руке и копьем в левой; в глубине еще фигура; в центре на переднем плане литавры; слева на скамье и около нее шлемы и доспехи, с белым знаменем; в глубине сквозь арку видна группа караульных, находящихся во второй комнате.

    Court Painter in Brussels

    Summoned by Archduke Leopold Wilhelm to the Brussels court, he was appointed court painter (pintor de cámara) and keeper of the archduke's extensive art collections.

    Title of Chamberlain

    He received from the archduke the title of "ayuda de cámara" (valet de chambre) — an extremely unusual honor for a painter; only one comparable case of the time is known — Velázquez.

  4. 1660

    Publication of the "Theatrum Pictorium"

    The album of engravings Theatrum Pictorium ("Theatre of Painting") was published in Brussels — in essence, the first illustrated catalogue of a private painting collection in history.

  5. 1663

    Founding of the Antwerp Academy

    He played an important role in the founding of the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Antwerp and was appointed its first director.
