About the sculpture

In the museum's own words — in French

Cette sculpture de grande stature pourrait être identifiée comme étant le " Neptune en terre cuite de 10 pieds" placé jusqu'en 1792 au vertugadin de la Ménagerie. Ce serait donc une des rares sculptures d'Ancien Régime qui soit parvenue jusqu'à nous. Elle est mentionnée dans les inventaires depuis juin 1822 dans le parc du château, d'abord au fond de la terrasse d'Enghien, puis dans le parc de Sylvie. Sa date de création, entre 1630 et 1720, a été précisée en 2021 par le centre de recherche et de restauration des musées de France, qui a procédé à une datation par luminescence.
