    Founds the Magnum Photos agency

    In 1947 in Paris Capa founded Magnum Photos with Henri Cartier-Bresson, William Vandivert, David Seymour and George Rodger: the first cooperative agency for freelance photographers worldwide.

  2. 1947

    A trip to the USSR with Steinbeck

    Capa suggested to John Steinbeck, whom he had met again in New York, that they go to the post-war Soviet Union together and make a book; he took photographs in Moscow, Kyiv, Tbilisi, Batumi and among the ruins of Stalingrad.

  3. 1947

    The Medal of Freedom from General Eisenhower

    In 1947 General Dwight D. Eisenhower awarded Capa the Medal of Freedom for his work recording the Second World War in pictures.

  4. 1947

    The memoir “Slightly Out of Focus”

    In 1947 Capa’s war memoir Slightly Out of Focus, with his own text and photographs, was published.

  5. 1948

    Photographing Israel in the year of its founding

    Capa toured Israel during its founding, while it was being attacked by neighbouring states; his photographs accompanied Irwin Shaw’s book Report on Israel.

  6. 1951 or 1952

    Becomes president of Magnum

    Capa took over the leadership of Magnum, becoming the agency’s president (in 1951 by some accounts, in 1952 by others), and held the position until his death in 1954.
